OH NO! What happened this time? So soon after Eena too :( Sounds like getting stuck into your randomised double-blind trial is a worthwhile pasttime right now!

Hmmm..interesting..I notice that Moe has no comb in the top pic and a red comb in the bottom - what's the signficance?

Juvenile chooks have just traces of their comb and wattles (the cheek/chin bits), and these gradually develop as the hen matures. These are both fairly old photos of Moe, before she had fully developed her 'mature look.'
Sadly she only reached maturity and a regular laying habit 2 - 3 months ago, so we thought she would be with us a while yet.

She was a hybrid cross, bred for the pot as well as for laying, and she was HUGE in comparison to the others - I wonder if her heart just couldn't keep up with her size. I guess her sisters will have been into the pot several months ago.

We chose Moe because of her lovely speckled feathers, and fell in love with her gentle morning 'chuckles' and her Madcap Moments when she was out in the garden - I'm sure she hallucinated purple dinosaurs !

Like all creatures who share our lives, she enriched our life appreciation. I hope there's a 'Hen Heaven' for such fun spirits.

Thank you for visiting, Fran - it's good to see you. x
