OH NO! What happened this time? So soon after Eena too :( Sounds like getting stuck into your randomised double-blind trial is a worthwhile pasttime right now!
Juvenile chooks have just traces of their comb and wattles (the cheek/chin bits), and these gradually develop as the hen matures. These are both fairly old photos of Moe, before she had fully developed her 'mature look.' Sadly she only reached maturity and a regular laying habit 2 - 3 months ago, so we thought she would be with us a while yet.
She was a hybrid cross, bred for the pot as well as for laying, and she was HUGE in comparison to the others - I wonder if her heart just couldn't keep up with her size. I guess her sisters will have been into the pot several months ago.
We chose Moe because of her lovely speckled feathers, and fell in love with her gentle morning 'chuckles' and her Madcap Moments when she was out in the garden - I'm sure she hallucinated purple dinosaurs !
Like all creatures who share our lives, she enriched our life appreciation. I hope there's a 'Hen Heaven' for such fun spirits.
Thank you for visiting, Fran - it's good to see you. x
Thank you for visiting. Glance over 'Meet The Family' below to catch a glimpse of the general landscape around here. Indulge me with a comment and I promise to try to visit you in return. And do call by again - life is always richer for sharing. I hope Life Is Good To You, now and always.
Chooks
Myna, Melody, Min, Maid Marion & Maybelline are profoundly bored of the rain that has dominated Glasgow's weather scenario these last few weeks - and who can blame them?
Still remembering feeling like ‘5 going on 40’, now feeling perhaps ’40-ish’ on a Good Day, and ’50-ish’ on a Not-So-Good-Day. Or maybe more..... we'll not go there!
'Acceptance','Re-Invention' , 'Re-Creation', 'Discovery' and 'Affirmation' continue to be current Life Requirements, living this present Chapter Of Life, and stirring the pot to add another recipe or two to Life's Rich Menu.
I guess there'll be plenty more burnt bits, and probably more than the expected half-baked bits, chewy bits and lumpy bits along the way.
Of Such Is Life.
(Maybe a cook school course is required......)
Blogging has become utensil, kitchen and cooker for the sauce and hot air of Souffle.
Other bits and pieces get stirred into Risotto.
Of Prime Importance (‘cos he's Gorgeous, AND still pays the bills), is The Hubby(TH). He is one of those people you meet who you remember. Especially his chuckle. I carelessly misplaced him at a large gathering. He was running the bar, but taking time out with camera to record the proceedings. An' I lost him......there was absolutely no sign of him – I tried the hall next door, outside, the loo (you know how it goes) – but no sign……… I was missing him...... Then I heard The Chuckle away over the other side of the venue (behind a pillar). Makes yer heart melt, that chuckle !
So that you can understand the general landscape, I need to include Father-in-Law who was 95 on his very last birthday, lived with us for five years, and died in mid-July 2008. He had severe dementia and was perhaps THE Main Reason for ChickPea entering the Blogosphere. We still miss him enormously. I guess he will continue with us here for a while to come. To Protect The Innocent, and because he was Ace at dominoes, I call him “Domino Joe” (DJ).
Ms Mog was my beloved feline companion for 20 years until summer 2009. Young Master Catlet bounced into our lives a wee while later and both eradicated and transformed the cat-shaped gap in the family.
The first 2 chooks arrived in July 2008, ate all the slugs they could find and gave us eggs - so in October 2008 we welcomed 2 more. Initially intended as therapy for Domino Joe, our flock has assisted our own rehabilitation and recovery post-caring, deafened our neighbours, and provide exercise as we try to catch them....... Eena, and then Moe and now Meena, have now passed the way of all flesh - leaving Myna, Melody, Magic and young Mystery as our flock until Mystery revealed why he wasn't laying eggs........ he went home, to be replaced by Min, Maid Marion and Maybelline. Mr Mutt joined us in September 2006 - a rescue dog ‘with issues’ - who we learned to both respect and accept. He became ill in the early summer of 2010, leaving the family bereft. An attempt to re-home a five year old dog proved painful and unsuccessful, so we now have a Monsterpuppy to complete the family. She is a black Standard Poodle, now 11 months old and a major delight and distraction (especially when the laptop is in use......)

Hmmm..interesting..I notice that Moe has no comb in the top pic and a red comb in the bottom - what's the signficance?
